Handing out bags of groceries with The Living Edge
Many of The Living Edge volunteers are seniors and they are really in the market for younger folks. Yesterday I met a sweet senior volunteer developed tendonitis while peeling potatoes :( The Living Edge is linked out of Church of Our Lord and, besides the Mustard Seed, it is probably the biggest grocery distribution service in Victoria. They are active every Tuesday and Thursday mornings and Sunday evening every week in Quadra Village. Involvement with this might include:a) Setting up and taking down the Sunday Service Meal at dinner time b) Handing out groceries in Quadra Village Tuesday and Thursdays 10-1130am
Steph Joy, Myself, Jason Rupke, and Simon Teague have all dabbled in this and would be happy to tell you what it's like.
Cleaning homes to prevent homelessness
The Dandelion Society is familiar with a decent sized demographic who are housed but at-risk of becoming homeless because, due to whatever barriers they face, they can’t keep their homes clean enough. If they had monthly or bi-monthly house-cleaning services it would be a game-changer for many lives.
A very practical opportunity to meet very real needs for a bunch vulnerable to becoming homelessness. The opportunity to make unique relationships is also there.
Available folks, just to be on-call
Regular, sporadic, or on-call volunteers are welcome for STREET HOPE. Street hope is pretty much a cozy portable living room (literally- it's in a big RV) that parks downtown, welcomes people from the street to relax, and provides a friendly atmosphere, hot chocolate and soup. Tim, Michelle and the other regulars can’t be there every week and it’s great for them to have numbers to call those evenings. Mark and Felicity have given a hand here among many other friends from the church, but be aware that more are welcome and appreciated. Tuesday and Thursday, 7:30-10.
Condiment box for Street Hope
Condiment bottles can be brought to the church to provide an important, ever-flowing supply for Street Hope.
Buy/find/steal some extra from the rich, bring them to Church of Our Lord anPB, JAM, and CHEEZE WHIZ are the most sought after.
Inner-city home-group leaders
While about 100-150 wait in line outside for their turn to grab groceries at The Living Edge, Neil and the gang are organizing home groups to be formed from the regular attendees in line, or anyone interested in stronger community. They’ll be one for the ladies one Tuesday and one for the Men Thursday. It’s in a beautiful room in the Quadra Community Centre, right where the groceries are dispersed.
Donated wool socks and underwear
...will be gifted to the guests of street hope. Socks and underwear are a significant need for those unable to do their laundry conveniently and WOOL socks promote healthier feet.
